Women We Admire
Today, March 8th, is International Women’s Day. This is a day to recognize the wage gap and lack of equality in the workplace, but also to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The World Economic Forum predicts that the gender gap won’t close entirely until 2186. Through campaigns and initiatives that raise awareness we can achieve a more inclusive, gender equal world much faster.
Women comprise almost half of Canada’s workforce yet they they hold fewer than 5% of CEO positions. Women are vastly underrepresented in S&P 500 companies.
Having said this, in recent years we have seen companies and leaders stepping up to create a more inclusive workplace. Here are a couple of highlights that we want to celebrate. Firstly, Salesforce hired a Chief Equality Officer, and dedicated $3 million to eliminate the wage gap in their organization. We’ve also noticed that a recent movement championed by McKinsey and Company, Deloitte, and Catalyst called #GoSponsorHer is gaining momentum. The #GoSponsorHer campaign is aiming to put more women in senior roles. You can visit their website here to learn more.
Today we also want to highlight some of the amazing #WomenWeAdmire both in our local community and in the business world in general. As a woman in the tech industry I have learned a lot from these women whether they realize it or not. Some of them I have never spoken to but have heard them speak or learned from their actions. It’s because of role models and influencers like these that we are paving the way toward equality in the workplace.
