Importance of Diversity In The Workplace
By embracing diversity in the workplace, organizations can reap a number of benefits. At Porpoise we’re proud to say that 50% of our employees were born outside of Canada. Here are a few of the benefits that we have discovered and want to share with other companies.
The first benefit is diverse viewpoints. Because of our different backgrounds we all have differing experiences, skills, lifestyles and beliefs that we use when formulating strategies and decisions. Because of this each of us tends to look at problems through a different set of lenses. A variety of diverse people working together to solve a problem results in a more holistic view which ultimately results in higher performance. Diversity has also been shown to result in innovation. For example, over half of the billion dollar startups founded in the United States were brought to life by non-US citizens.
At Porpoise we have two extremely talented employees working with us remotely from Colombia. We wouldn’t have been capable of connecting with them if it weren’t for one of our developers who is originally from Colombia. Our company is proof that by hiring a diverse workforce, you unlock access to a much greater network of talent.
Similarly, embracing employees from diverse backgrounds allows us to be better able to serve people in other countries and in other languages. In other words, by hiring a diverse employee base, it increase your capacity to conduct business on a greater scale geographically. We also hold fewer assumptions about other cultures, and are more aware of our cultural biases that we hold.
When employees know their workplace embraces diversity, they are more likely to feel comfortable being themselves, and when they feel they can be themselves, their performance will increase. If you aren’t embracing diversity in the workplace, you’re missing out on a huge opportunity. A McKinsey and Company study found that ethnically diverse companies are 35% more likely to perform than non-diverse companies.
